Intro
A slow computer is one of the most frustrating tech problems people face — and one of the most common calls I get as a Reno computer technician. The good news is that in most cases, slowness is completely fixable. Here are the seven most common reasons your computer is running slow, and what you can do about each one.
Reason #1: Too Many Programs Starting Up Automatically
Every time you install a program, it often adds itself to your computer’s startup list. Over time, you can end up with dozens of programs all trying to load at once when you turn on your computer — which is why it takes so long to be ready in the morning.
The fix: Go into your startup settings and disable programs you don’t need running all the time. A tech tune-up can handle this automatically and shave minutes off your startup time.
Reason #2: Not Enough Free Hard Drive Space
When your hard drive gets too full — usually above 80-85% capacity — your computer slows down noticeably. Windows and Mac both use free disk space as temporary “working room” when running programs.
The fix: Delete files you no longer need, empty the recycling bin, and move photos and videos to an external drive or cloud storage. A tune-up includes a full disk cleanup.
Reason #3: Too Many Browser Tabs and Extensions
Each open browser tab uses memory. If you’re someone who keeps 15 tabs open at all times, your browser alone might be using more resources than anything else on your computer.
The fix: Get in the habit of closing tabs you’re done with, and remove browser extensions you don’t use regularly.
Reason #4: Malware or Viruses Running in the Background
Malware doesn’t always announce itself. Often it just quietly runs in the background, using your computer’s processor and slowing everything down. If your computer started getting slow around the same time you downloaded something or visited an unfamiliar website, malware may be the cause.
The fix: A full malware scan and removal. This is one of the most common fixes I perform for Reno residents.
Reason #5: Your Computer Needs Updates
Outdated software — especially the operating system — can cause slowdowns and compatibility issues. Updates aren’t just about new features; they often fix performance problems and security vulnerabilities.
The fix: Allow Windows or macOS updates to complete fully. This sometimes requires a restart and some patience.
Reason #6: Your Computer Is Getting Old
Computers from 5-7+ years ago were not designed to run today’s software. If your computer is older, it may simply not have enough processing power or memory to keep up — especially as programs get more complex.
The fix: A tune-up can squeeze more life out of an older machine. Adding RAM or switching to an SSD drive can make a dramatic difference in performance at a fraction of the cost of a new computer.
Reason #7: It Just Needs a Good Cleaning
Literally — physically. Dust buildup inside a computer causes it to overheat, and when a computer overheats, it slows itself down to protect the components. Desktop computers in particular benefit from being cleaned out with compressed air once a year.
The fix: Physical cleaning plus a full software tune-up. I offer this as part of in-home visits in Reno and Sparks.
